Astrology compares this to a person in their own house, who knows every door and need ask nobody for permission. In the birth chart, a planet in domicile shows where someone acts with natural ease.","Domicile in astrology: a planet in its own sign acts at full strength. All seven assignments explained. Check your dignities in the birth chart.",[13,16,19,22,25
Type","Essential dignity (strongest level)
Counterpart","Detriment (opposite sign)
Planets","Sun to Saturn (classical)
Signs per planet","1 for Sun and Moon, 2 for all others
Effect","Unbroken, effortless strength",{},[30,33,36,39
Meaning in the birth chart","A planet in domicile expresses its principle without translation. Mars in Aries does not have to learn how to begin; it begins. Venus in Taurus does not have to explain enjoyment; she lives it. Interpretation reads from this an area of life in which a person has little need to pretend and in which talent and expression coincide. That has a flip side: what succeeds effortlessly is easily overdone or taken for granted. The Sun in Leo, for instance, shines, but may overlook that others need light too. That is why domicile describes not only a strength, but also the question of the right measure of that strength.
The planets and their signs","The classical table assigns fixed signs to each of the seven visible planets. Sun and Moon rule one each: the Sun rules Leo, the Moon Cancer. The five remaining planets each have two domiciles, one on the day side and one on the night side of the zodiac. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mars Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. The arrangement follows a symmetry: starting from Leo and Cancer, the rulers lie around the zodiac in mirror image, in the order of their distance from the Sun. Once you have seen that, you can derive the table from memory.
Origins and tradition","The system of dignities is of Hellenistic origin and was summarised in the second century in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos. There, domicile forms the basis for all further assignments of exaltation, bounds and decans. The Arabic astrology of the Middle Ages adopted the table, and in the seventeenth century William Lilly's Christian Astrology gave it the point scoring still in use today, in which domicile receives the highest value. The doctrine remained almost unchanged for nearly two millennia, which is rare in astrology.
Modern reading","With the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, new rulers were assigned to Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio. These modern rulerships are attributions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and do not belong to the classical system of dignities. For that reason, the three outer planets receive no dignity in this calculation, but a note that they count as the modern ruler of their sign. Saturn in Aquarius is still in domicile; Uranus in Aquarius is in its modern sign. Both may be read side by side without one cancelling the other.",[43,46,49
Is a planet in domicile automatically good?","It is strong, not automatically pleasant. Strength means that the planet's principle shows clearly, with all its merits and with the tendency to excess. Interpretation therefore always asks about measure as well.
How many planets are typically in domicile?","Usually none or one, rarely two. Each planet has only one or two of twelve signs as its domicile, so the probability per planet lies between eight and seventeen per cent.
Does domicile also count for the ascendant or the houses?","The dignity applies to planets in signs. The ascendant has no domicile, but its ruler can have one, and that strengthens the interpretation of the ascendant indirectly.","/en/dignities/domicile/",[54,57,60
Exaltation","/en/dignities/exaltation/
Detriment","/en/dignities/detriment/
Fall","/en/dignities/fall/",1793051118317]
