Exaltation

Essential dignity · The planet as honoured guest

Exaltation is the second classical dignity: a planet stands in a sign that does not house it, but honours it especially. Tradition compares this to a guest who is given the best seat at the table. In the birth chart, an exalted planet shows an area in which someone acts with a tailwind, and at the same time the temptation to rely on that tailwind.

Meaning in the birth chart

An exalted planet acts in a heightened and visible way, but unlike in domicile not out of habit, rather out of a moment of favour. The Sun in Aries shows courage and new beginnings in their purest form, the Moon in Taurus an emotional calm that others can rely on. Interpretation reads exaltation as a talent that shows early and attracts affirmation. That is exactly where the practice lies: anyone who always gets the best seat may forget that they do not own it. Exalted planets therefore need stamina, so that a brilliant start also becomes a road that carries.

The planets and their signs

Each classical planet has exactly one sign of exaltation. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer and Saturn in Libra. Mercury is a special case: Virgo is both its domicile and its exaltation, which is why Mercury has there the strongest placement this system knows at all. Tradition even names a degree for each exaltation, such as the nineteenth degree of Aries for the Sun; in practice, the whole sign usually counts, and that is how this calculation handles it as well.

Origins and tradition

The exaltations are older than the rest of the dignity system and go back to Babylonian astrology, where certain planets were considered especially effective at certain places in the sky. Ptolemy adopted the list in the second century in the Tetrabiblos and tried to justify it from the course of the year: the Sun is exalted in Aries, he argued, because that is where the days grow longer in spring. The medieval authors and later William Lilly kept the assignment unchanged and gave exaltation the second-highest value in the point scoring after domicile.

Modern reading

For Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, there is no traditional exaltation. Some modern authors have made suggestions, such as Uranus in Scorpio, but none of these assignments has become established. This calculation therefore does without dignities for the three outer planets and only indicates when one of them stands as modern ruler in its sign, that is Uranus in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces or Pluto in Scorpio. The classical table thus remains clean and verifiable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between domicile and exaltation?

In domicile, the planet is at home and is strong out of habit. In exaltation, it is a guest and is strong out of favour, often more conspicuously, but less steadily.

Can a planet be in domicile and exalted at the same time?

Only Mercury in Virgo. For all other planets, domicile and sign of exaltation lie apart.

Does exaltation only count at a specific degree?

The old doctrine names degrees, but most astrologers work with the whole sign. This calculation also uses the whole sign.
