The number 5
Numerology · Freedom, change, hunger for experience
The 5 is the number of movement. In numerology it stands in the middle of the series from 1 to 9 and works like a hinge: it loosens the order of the 4 and opens the view to the new. Where it stands in the number profile, freedom, curiosity and change become a life theme, along with the wish to experience as much as possible for yourself.
Meaning in numerology
The 5 is the number of the five senses and of the human being with outstretched arms. In numerology it embodies a thirst for adventure, versatility, adaptability and the urge to taste life in its full breadth. People with a strongly placed 5 are considered lively, quick-witted and adaptable; they learn fast, get bored just as fast and blossom when something is moving. The flip side is restlessness: anyone who is always looking for the next thing misses the depth of the present, and anyone who experiences every bond as a shackle ends up alone with their freedom.
As Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge number
As a Life Path number the 5 describes a path full of twists on which the person learns to live freedom with others rather than against them and to see change as an ally. As an Expression number it shows talents for communication, travel, sales, mediation and everything that demands mobility. As a Soul Urge number it speaks of an inner need for freedom that quickly feels uncomfortable in narrow circumstances. As a Personality number the 5 comes across as attractive, witty and unpredictable, often younger than it is.
Growth theme
The growth theme of the 5 is choice. Freedom does not mean keeping everything open, but seizing your own option from many possibilities and standing by it. The mature 5 stays curious and mobile but finds anchors: people, places or tasks it returns to. Then restlessness becomes a liveliness that infects others instead of wearing them out. As a Personal Year the 5 invites you to widen what has become narrow and to dare something new without burning all your bridges.
Origin
The Pythagoreans saw in the 5 the union of the first even with the first odd number and thus an emblem of the marriage of opposites; the pentagram was their badge of recognition. Modern letter numerology according to Mrs L. Dow Balliett and Juno Jordan assigned Mercury to the 5 as the sign of mobility and exchange. This portal calculates according to the Pythagorean table, in which E, N and W carry the value 5.
