Chiron
The wounded healer · Wound point and gift
Chiron is not a classical planet but a small body between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and named after the wise centaur of Greek mythology. In interpretation it marks the wound point of a birth chart: the place where a person was vulnerable early on – and from precisely there develops the ability to help others.
Meaning in the birth chart
Chiron describes the point where a person experienced themselves as vulnerable early on – a place that cannot simply be trained away and yet becomes the source of particular abilities. The sign shows the kind of wound and the tone in which it is handled, the house the area of life in which it is felt. Interpretation never reads Chiron as a deficiency but as a teacher: anyone who knows their own sensitive spot often understands the vulnerability of others more deeply than any theory. From this grows the typical Chiron gift of accompanying people exactly where you yourself would once have needed accompanying. The path therefore does not lead around the wound but through it, to a competence nobody chose.
Myth and discovery
In Greek mythology Chiron is the wise centaur who teaches heroes such as Achilles and Asclepius in the arts of healing, music and hunting. Struck by a poisoned arrow, the immortal cannot die of his injury and learns to teach with it – until he gives up his immortality. The celestial body 2060 Chiron was discovered in 1977 and shows characteristics of both asteroid and comet; it is considered the first known centaur, a class of small bodies on unstable orbits in the outer solar system. That a being between two natures should name a body between two planetary orbits immediately made Chiron, for astrology, the bridge between Saturn (boundary, structure) and Uranus (liberation, the leap).
Chiron over the course of life
With an orbital period of around fifty years, Chiron returns to its birth position at about the fiftieth birthday. Astrology reads this Chiron return as a time of taking stock: old hurt makes itself felt once more, often at the same time as the wish to pass on experience – as a mentor, teacher or companion. Because its orbit is strongly elliptical, Chiron lingers only a year and a half in some signs and up to eight in others; whole year groups therefore share a Chiron sign and with it a generational theme. Personal weight only arises through house and aspects: Chiron on the ascendant or in close contact with the Sun or Moon leaves a stronger mark than a quiet Chiron in the ninth house.
Calculation on this portal
Chiron cannot be projected forward from simple orbital elements, because Saturn and Uranus continually disturb its orbit. This portal therefore uses a stored position table from the NASA/JPL Horizons system (public domain), which contains geocentric longitudes from 1900 to 2100 and is finely interpolated between the reference points. For births in this period Chiron appears with sign, degree and house in the table of additional points; outside it, it is deliberately omitted rather than estimated. Chiron does not feed into aspects, element balance or dominance – it supplements the chart without overlaying the classical interpretation. The methodology page documents the data source.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chiron a planet?
No. Chiron is a small body with properties of both asteroid and comet, orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Astrology nevertheless interprets it like a planet, because its position in the chart describes a distinct, clearly delimited theme.
What does Chiron in my sign mean?
The sign describes what kind of vulnerability a person knows and in what tone they deal with it – self-worth in Leo, for example, or belonging in Cancer. The house shows the area of life in which a helping ability grows from it.
Why is Chiron missing from some charts?
Many programs list Chiron as an optional point or not at all. This portal shows it for births between 1900 and 2100; for other dates no reliable table is available, and the point is then left out rather than estimated.
