Part of Fortune
Pars Fortunae · where ease and success lie
The Part of Fortune is the best known of the so-called Arabic parts: not a celestial body but a place in the zodiac calculated from the ascendant, Sun and Moon. Tradition reads it as the place where a person is in their element with little effort – where things succeed easily and well-being grows.
Meaning in the birth chart
The Part of Fortune bundles the three most important factors of a birth chart – ascendant, Sun and Moon – into a single place. Interpretation understands it as the spot where body, will and feeling are in accord: there a person feels right as if by themselves, there things succeed without a feat of strength. The sign describes the style of this success, the house the area of life in which it shows – learning and travel in the ninth house, for example, friendships in the eleventh. The Part of Fortune promises no winnings and no lucky strike; it names a direction in which effort turns into yield more easily than elsewhere. Planets in close conjunction colour the point and show what feeds the success.
The day and night formula
The classical formula distinguishes by the sect of the chart. For a day birth – the Sun above the horizon, in houses seven to twelve – the rule is ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. For a night birth, Sun and Moon are swapped: ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. The Part of Fortune thus always lies as far from the ascendant as the Moon is from the Sun, measured in the direction of the light that currently prevails. Many modern calculators always use the day formula for simplicity; this portal follows the Hellenistic sect rule as handed down by Ptolemy and Vettius Valens, and shows the point only when a birth time is given – without an ascendant it is not defined.
Origin and tradition
The Arabic parts are older than their name suggests. Hellenistic astrology in antiquity already worked with lots that derive a third place from the distance between two factors; Arab scholars of the Middle Ages systematised and multiplied them, hence today's name. The Part of Fortune, Pars Fortunae in Latin, is the first and most important of these points and was treated in the tradition like a second Moon, describing the body and good fortune in life. Its counterpart, the Part of Spirit, arises from the reversed formula. Modern psychological astrology long neglected the lots; since the return to Hellenistic techniques, the Part of Fortune has been enjoying a renaissance.
Meaning by house
Because the Part of Fortune is measured from the ascendant, its house carries particular weight. In the first house it stands for people who find their own presence comes easily; in the fourth for success through rootedness and retreat; in the seventh for partnerships that give back more than they cost; in the tenth for a career that almost arranges itself. Interpretation also looks at the ruler of the sign in which the point stands: its position shows by what detour success is reached. A Part of Fortune is never an assurance – it marks a door that opens more easily than others; everyone has to walk through it themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Part of Fortune mean I am lucky at games?
No. The point describes the area of life in which things come more easily to a person and where they feel at ease. It has nothing to do with chance or winnings.
Why is the Part of Fortune missing from my chart?
Without a birth time there is no ascendant, and without an ascendant the Part of Fortune cannot be calculated. As soon as a time is entered, it appears in the table of additional points.
Why is my Part of Fortune somewhere else on other calculators?
Most differences come from the night formula. Calculators that always use the day formula place the point, for night births, at the opposite position measured from the ascendant. This portal distinguishes day and night according to the classical rule.
