The Hermit
Major Arcana IX · Withdrawal, insight and your own light
An old man stands alone on a snow-covered summit and holds a lantern out into the darkness. The Hermit is the card of introspection: he has distanced himself from the crowd, not out of aversion, but to see more clearly. What he finds shines not only for him but for all who seek the way after him.
Image & Symbolism
The image is sparse, and that is exactly what makes its effect. A bearded man in a long, grey hooded cloak stands on a height, beneath him only white. Grey is the colour between the opposites – neither black nor white, a sign of judgement that does not think in extremes. In his right hand he raises a lantern in which a six-pointed star burns. This light does not reach far, only as far as the next step; he needs no more. In his left hand he carries a plain staff that supports him and at the same time recalls the long way that lies behind him. His gaze goes downward, as if he were waiting for someone following him. The snow stands for stillness and distance, the summit for an overview that has been earned. In the Golden Dawn system the Hermit belongs to Virgo, an earth sign under the rulership of Mercury. That adds something practical to the image: the Hermit's wisdom is no floating above things but close looking, ordering and testing. He does not seek the great experience of enlightenment but what proves itself in everyday life.
As a birth card
If the nine is your birth card, you need time for yourself in order to be fully yourself – that is not a weakness but your way of working. Without a second card beside it, the Hermit embodies both: how you come across and what drives you inwardly. In addition, he stands as the soul card behind the Moon, the eighteen, and gives its feel for the unconscious a clear, examining gaze. In everyday life your thoroughness stands out. You are rarely satisfied with the first answer and think questions through to the end that others tick off quickly. Professionally you are strong where concentration, expertise and independent work count: in research, consulting, crafts, writing or wherever someone has to keep the overview. In friendships and partnerships you are not a person for many, but for few and therefore deep connections. Those close to you value your honest advice and your ability to listen without judging at once. What matters for you is a place of retreat where you can gather yourself – a room, a garden, a path you regularly walk alone.
As a year card
A Hermit year does not call for pace but for stillness. It can be a good time to look at your own life from the outside for once: which obligations have you taken on out of habit? Whose opinion do you hear more loudly than your own? The lantern on the card reminds you that orientation is possible in small steps too – nobody has to survey the whole path at once. Fixed times without a screen can help, walks alone, or a journal in which you sort your thoughts. Learning fits this theme too: a field you want to work your way into thoroughly. Withdrawal here does not mean loneliness but deliberately chosen quiet. A question that can accompany you through the year: what do I already know, if I only become quiet enough to hear it? Some answers lie not in guidebooks but in your own experiences of recent years.
Light & Shadow
At his best the Hermit is a person with his own compass, little impressed by trends and for that very reason able to give others orientation. His strength is the ability to be alone without feeling lost. The darker side shows when withdrawal becomes isolation. Then it becomes hard to ask for support, to allow criticism of your own view, or to share thoughts at all before they are perfect. A certain severity with yourself, which stems from the Virgo attribution, can also become a theme. It is worth not holding the lantern only for yourself: the knowledge you have found wants to be shared, and closeness need not endanger your independence. A good first step is a single person with whom you share your half-finished thoughts before they shine.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Hermit mean that you are lonely?
No. The Hermit describes chosen withdrawal, not unwanted loneliness. Whoever has him as a birth card recharges in quiet and thinks best alone, but can live very connected to others. The image shows a person holding up his light so that others find the way. Community is therefore very much part of it – just in a quieter, more conscious form.
What does the Hermit's lantern symbolise?
In the lantern burns a six-pointed star. It stands for insight you have worked out for yourself, and for the connection of above and below, mind and everyday life. The lantern lights only a small stretch of the way. There is a beautiful message in that: you do not have to know everything to take the next step safely. The star in the lantern also recalls the later Star of the Major Arcana: hope that comes from within.
Which cards are connected with the Hermit?
In the birth card calculation the Hermit forms a pair with the Moon, because eighteen gives a digit sum of nine. Whoever has the Moon as a personality card carries the Hermit within as soul card: the sensitivity on the outside is carried within by prudence and the wish for clarity. Through Virgo the card is also related to Mercury and thus to the Magician.
