The World
Completion and wholeness · Major Arcana XXI
In the classic count The World is the last card of the Major Arcana. A dancing figure floats in an oval laurel wreath; in the corners four beings keep watch. The image stands for completion, wholeness and the good feeling of having arrived at a place where all parts of a path fit together.
Image & Symbolism
In the middle of the card a figure dances, loosely draped only in a violet cloth. In each hand she holds a slender wand; one leg is slightly bent, as if she were just setting a step into the air. Around her stretches a large wreath of laurel, tied at top and bottom with red ribbons into a figure eight on its side – a sign of infinity and the eternal cycle. In the four corners appear a human or angel, an eagle, a lion and a bull. These beings correspond to the four fixed zodiac signs Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo and Taurus, and thus to the four elements. The same figures already appear on the Wheel of Fortune, there still reading and learning, here calm and complete. Since antiquity the laurel has been the wreath of success. The dancer shows that completion does not mean standstill but movement in balance. The Golden Dawn assigns the card to Saturn, the planet of time, form and maturity. Saturn stands for what takes shape through patience and perseverance – the World is the reward of a long path walked in earnest.
As a birth card
With the World as a personality card you often strike others as rounded, self-assured and open to the world. You have a feel for the big picture and can connect people, ideas and cultures with one another. Behind the 21 stands The Empress as soul card (2 + 1 = 3). Inwardly you are driven by the joy of shaping, of nourishing and of creating something alive. This mixture lets you finish projects that others leave lying at some point, and fill them with beauty and meaning. At work you are in the right place where threads come together: in organisation, project management, international collaboration, design or in activities that link different areas. Travel and foreign perspectives inspire you. In relationships you seek a connectedness that leaves room – closeness that does not confine, and shared goals through which both grow.
As a year card
A year with the World as its theme lends itself to closing circles. Which undertakings do you want to round off before you begin something new? What have you achieved in recent years without properly appreciating it? The card invites a look back full of recognition, but also a look outward: perhaps it tempts you to widen your horizon, plan a journey, learn a language or get to know people from other walks of life. Celebrating matters – an ending deserves a conscious moment. At the same time you can check which loose ends are still open. Whoever closes a chapter in peace walks into the next with light luggage.
Light & Shadow
The bright side of the World is integration: you can reconcile opposites within yourself, join experiences into a meaningful whole and feel at home in very different surroundings. Perseverance and maturity give you composure. Saturn brings the shadow: the demand that everything must be perfectly finished can keep you from letting go at all. Some with this card stay in a comfort zone they have reached, because the next beginning means uncertainty again. Others never feel truly arrived, because the goal always seems a bit too small to them. Your task is to understand completion as a stopover. After the World the path begins again with the Fool – and that is exactly what makes the card so comforting.
Frequently asked questions
What do the four beings in the corners of the World card mean?
Human, eagle, lion and bull stand for the four fixed signs of the zodiac – Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo and Taurus – and thus for air, water, fire and earth. Together they frame the dancer and show that all elements come together in her. Wholeness here means that no side is missing and all forces are in balance.
Which soul card does The World have?
The 21 gives a digit sum of 3, that is, The Empress. The World describes your manner – expansive, connecting, completing. The Empress shows your inner drive – shaping, tending, letting grow. The Hanged Man, card 12, has the same soul card. What all three share is the wish to let something alive ripen.
Is The World the last card in Tarot?
In the classic count The World carries the number 21 and closes the sequence of the Major Arcana. In the birth card calculation, however, the Fool counts as 22 and thus follows after the World. This reading emphasises the cycle: after every completion a new path begins with open eyes.
Why does Saturn belong to the World card?
In astrology Saturn stands for time, structure, responsibility and maturity. The World shows the result of a long path that is reached only through patience and perseverance. In the Golden Dawn attribution Saturn is moreover the outermost of the classical planets – fitting for the card that closes the frame of the Major Arcana.
