Opposition
180° · Tension that creates awareness
The opposition places two planets directly across from each other: two forces that seem to want opposite things. It is the aspect of encounter – with others and with one's own inner contradictions.
Effect
In the opposition, two principles pull in opposite directions: closeness versus freedom (Moon–Uranus), self versus partner (Sun–Moon across the axes), duty versus dream (Saturn–Neptune). Typical is the swinging back and forth – sometimes you live one side, sometimes the other – and the projection: the unlived half meets you strikingly often in the shape of other people who embody exactly what you do not see in yourself.
Light and shadow
Its shadow is permanent conflict: the back and forth between two poles, which costs energy, and the tendency to stage the inner contradiction as an outer dispute. Its light is awareness: no aspect teaches more thoroughly that two truths can hold at the same time. People who live their oppositions develop breadth of vision and the art of negotiation – they know both sides from the inside.
Interpretation in the chart
Oppositions always run across a house axis and thus join two areas of life into one arc of tension – origins and calling (4/10), for instance, or I and you (1/7). The question for interpretation is never “which side wins?”, but “how do both carry together?”. Mature oppositions become balance: a both-and with conscious alternation instead of unconscious swinging.
Frequently asked questions
Is an opposition something bad?
No – it is strenuous and strongly developmental at the same time. Oppositions create the awareness that conjunctions lack: the distance from which both forces can be seen and reconciled.
Why do I keep meeting my opposition themes in other people?
That is the typical projection of this aspect: the unlived side of the opposition is delegated to other people and fought or admired there. Taking the projection back is the path of development.
