Square
90° · Productive friction
The square places two planets at a right angle: their forces block and challenge each other – the most uncomfortable aspect, and at the same time the one from which the most development arises.
Effect
In the square, two principles want different things at the same time – and neither gives way: Moon square Mars sets feeling and action alight against each other, Sun square Saturn places tests in the way of self-expression, Venus square Neptune blurs love and dream. Unlike the opposition, which swings, the square generates constant pressure: an inner grinding that cannot be ignored – and precisely because of that, it forces action.
Light and shadow
Its shadow shows early: recurring conflicts, inner blocks, the feeling of working against oneself. Its light shows later: no aspect builds as much substance. The friction of the square is training resistance – against it, people develop the abilities that trines only promise. The biographies of strikingly successful people are often rich in squares: the pressure became the driving force.
Interpretation in the chart
With the square, the question worth asking is: which third solution honours both forces? Moon–Mars, for instance, learns to express anger early and in measured doses instead of exploding or swallowing it. Squares usually join signs of the same modality – the conflict has a system and therefore also a systematic solution. Their orb and the houses involved show where life practises regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Are squares in the chart something terrible?
No – they are strenuous and valuable: squares show where friction turns into growth. A chart without squares sounds pleasant, but it often lacks an engine.
How do you “resolve” a square?
Not at all in the sense of making it go away: you learn to live both forces one after the other or in a third form. The block becomes a rhythm – the pressure remains, but it drives instead of braking.
